👋 Hello World
Mar 1, 2022
Writing sure is difficult. I’ve had a few false starts in old blogs, but I could never keep it consistent. This time, I’m trying something different. I have a topic to discuss, and I’m not going to try to refine my posts too much. It’s all stream-of-consciousness. They say that quantity’s better than quality here—more chances to practice and hone my writing.
I started this blog for a number of reasons. For starters, I’d like to see if I can build a small software business that makes money on the Internet. If this thing works out, some passive income from a passion project would be great. If this thing really works out, I’d get financial independence, creative freedom, and the ability to work on my own terms—things my current job doesn’t provide.
There are downsides, of course. Income can be less steady, and there are way more risks. If I ever made a mistake at my current company that cost it $2 million, I would suffer no consequences. I’d write an incident doc, and everyone would celebrate the learning opportunity. For most indie startups like DocsToSite, a mistake like that would mean the end of their business.
Above all, it’s hard work to create something so complex while juggling a full-time job and maintaining a sane social life. There aren’t any StackOverflow guides on how to build a website builder. I’m writing code that’s supposed to generate more code—there’s layers to this! I’ll probably face hundreds of micro-decisions before I launch, all in the realm of code, design, marketing, & customer support. Sometimes I feel like my head’s so deep in the water with just trying to sail through the next task that it’s impossible to see the horizon.
And that’s why I chose this url, monthlycupof.coffee, to remind myself what my north star is. Before I can make any serious amount of money on the Internet, I have to start with my first few dollars. I also wanted to keep some sort of log for this journey, both for myself and as a way to share what I learn for others.
That’s it for my intro post. See you next time.
